The 2018 Flanagan Pinot Noir Gap’s View Vineyard offers an expressive nose of orange blossom, clove, and black truffle. On the palate the wine has very fine tannins, great acidity, and displays pretty red currant and Rainier cherry fruits.
The key to producing top flight Pinot Noir is the site. The Gap’s View Vineyard has the right climate and soils to produce great Pinot Noir. The winemaking is focused on balance and allowing the site and the vintage to express itself.
Vineyard Notes
Since our purchase of Gap’s View in 2015 we have made several viticultural improvements including implementing sustainable farming practices, improving pruning protocols, composting, and using organic verma-extract as a soil pro-biotic. Gap’s View is a valley floor planting with a very slight slope, the soils are heavier clay loams, and the site is very windy. As result, it produces a richer profile typically dominated by black fruits.
The 2018 vintage was a typical Sonoma County growing season…except for the unusually large crop. The Pinot Noir crop was about 30% larger than 2017. This site also had a large crop in 2018 with yields well above average. A warm growing season, with no rain late in the year, allowed us to ripen the larger than normal crop.
